Planning A Remodel? You Might Want To Check The Sanborn Maps
We recently received an email from a Swiss Avenue neighbor who discovered a helpful resource that might come in handy if you are planning to restore a property in our district that includes a guest house. Due to zoning rules, if you are restoring a guest house that includes a bath and kitchen, you might need to provide documentation that your home's address originally included a second dwelling. One resource for providing this documentation are The Sanborn Insurance Maps, drafted in the early 1920s.
The Sanborn Maps are located at Dallas City Hall. Or, if you prefer, you can easily access the Dallas collection online at http://www.lib.utexas.edu/maps/sanborn/d.html
This partial image below from Sheet 399 of the Sanborn Insurance Maps, drafted in 1922, shows Swiss Avenue and Bryan Parkway between Glendale and Skillman. East of Skillman, both Swiss Avenue and Bryan Parkway extend outside the Dallas City Limits! Live Oak was called Lindell and La Vista did not yet exist.
